Though we aim to make our process and policies clear, sometimes questions still arise. We encourage you to review these frequently asked questions, and follow up with us should you have any further inquires!

Frequently Asked
Partner Questions

  • Very rarely. Some exceptions are made for emergency needs or special projects that uniquely connect to Marie or the foundation — though we usually identify those opportunities proactively. We do not, however, give outside the United States.

  • Many things! We welcome proposals for most types of funding, but do not fund, contribute to, or initiate endowments. If you really want the fine print, you can learn more about what we do / don’t fund here.

  • We don’t enjoy saying no, but sometimes proposals aren’t a good fit or other proposals take priority. Still, we value the work you do and would be glad to talk through our decision and offer feedback for future proposals. Email grants@marielamfrom.org and we’ll schedule some time together.

  • The minimum grant term for funding is 12 months, and we require a grant report before a new application can be submitted. So, if you receive funding in June 2022 and submit a grant report in March 2023, you still cannot pursue a new grant by joining the application waitlist until June 2023 or later. For those in multi-year awards, you cannot pursue new funding until the full award is expensed and the full cycle is complete (e.g. 24 months for a 2-year award).

  • We know some folks might not be able to use our applicant portal due to differences in ability, language, or accessibility. If you or someone you know needs support to access and engage in the application process, please contact us via email or by phone at (503)877-3943.

  • We know grant applications can be gruesome, especially if you don’t have a “grant-writing person” on your team. We’ve tried to make our process as streamlined as possible, but always welcome feedback on how to improve.

Right now, all organizations sign up for our waitlist by completing a short eligibility quiz (exceptions for our Sunflower Grant). Once you move to the top of the queue, you will be invited to submit a Preliminary Application so we can get to know you, your project, and answer: "Does this seem like a good fit?” If no, we tell you before you spend tons of time on the app. If yes, you’re invited to complete the full Grant Proposal. To learn more about our process, please click here.

  • Yes, but usually for organizations with whom we have partnered in the past. Organizations can submit proposals for multi-year funding partnerships of 2-4 years, should a one-time grant not suit the needs of the organization. Keep in mind that you will not be able to apply for other MLCF grants while actively receiving a multi-year grant.

  • Unfortunately we can’t say ‘yes’ to everyone. Our best tips? Paint a picture — a world with and without your efforts. Demonstrate the impact. Be authentic: leave the script at the door. Have vision. Be honest about what you need and want. Follow through. Ask questions! We are here to help. Reach out any time at info@marielamfrom.org.

  • You cannot apply for more than one grant in the same program (e.g. two monthly Rose grants or two annual Zinnia grants) but you can apply for more than one grant in different programs (e.g. a monthly Rose grant and an annual Zinnia grant). Still need clarification? Review the grant details here, or email us at grants@marielamfrom.org.

  • Absolutely! You can’t apply on their behalf, but we always want to get connected with great nonprofits and organizations. If you send an email to info@marielamfrom.org we will personally reach out to the org you recommended. If they seem like a potentially good fit, we’ll invite them to apply for a grant.
